A
late penalty 25 metres out from the Picton Magpies try
line late in the second half has broken the deadlock
between the Magpies and the Oakdale Workers where the
former run out 30 to 28 point winners at Victoria Park
on Sunday in what was their first back-to-back wins
for the 2008 1st Grade Group 6 season.
The
Workers gave away a penalty 25 metres out from the Magpies
try line in the dying stages after Magpies half back
Will Dreves was taken out late after he had kicked the
ball, and this awarded the Magpies a penalty right in
front of the posts and it resulted in Magpies hooker
Matt Brinkworth kicking the penalty goal that earned
his side their first successive wins of the season in
what was a very entertaining game of Rugby League.
At
the half time break it was the Magpies that led the
Workers 18 to 4, but it was the Workers that fought
their way back in the second half and with only minutes
left on the clock the scores were locked at 28 all up
until the late penalty was awarded that handed the Magpies
the win.
It
was nearly a case of déjà vu; after the Magpies tasted
defeat at the hands of the Workers back in round two
after letting a comfortable lead slip, but on this occasion
the Magpies held on to record their third victory of
the 2008 season.
With
a side full mixed with a blend of youth and experience,
Magpies coach Noel Wood is very pleased with the fighting
spirit of his side and the progress that they are making
as they aim to fight their way back into semi-final
contention.
“The
game was one of two half’s, in the first half we were
playing some of the best Rugby League we have all year,
and in the second half we dropped off a bit, but did
enough to get up for the win, so I’m pleased about that,”
Wood said.
“There
are still a few areas that we need to work on as a team,
such as compliancy, and in the second half we chose
a number of wrong options, and those types of things
will be ironed out with more game time.”
Try
scorers for the Magpies in their win included Justin
Miller, Will Dreves, Daniel Bacon, Matt Brinkworth,
while goals were kicked by Brinkworth x 4 and Darren
Nolan x 1. The best players for the Magpies were Nolan,
Bacon, and Sutton.
In
Reserve Grade the Magpies went down to a 12-man Workers
side 22 to 18 after the Workers had a player sent off
in the opening minutes for alleged kneeing in a tackle.
The
Magpies had a player sent off in their 20 to 18 points
loss to the Mt. Annan Knights in the Under 18 A’s, while
the Under 18 B’s came close to their first win of the
season when they were defeated by the Bowral Bunnies
28 to 24.
There
are to be no Group 6 matches played over the Queen’s
Birthday Long Weekend.
