The
Picton Magpies notched up their second win of the 2008
First Grade Group 6 season when they defeated the Narellan
Jets at Victoria Park on Sunday 44 to 28.
Up
until the 65th minute the Magpies held down a commanding
40 to 12 points lead over the Jets, but a late try scoring
spree from the Jets saw them bring some respectability
back into the final score.
For
the Magpies this was their second over the Jets for
the year, and it saw youngster Jae Taylor score two
tries, while the likes of Darren Nolan, Jeremy McKay,
Dean Balderson, Justin Miller, Will Dreves, Daniel Bacon,
and Matt Brinkworth also got themselves on the try scoring
list.
It
was a return of that winning feeling for the Magpies,
and apart from the players themselves, there was none
more relieved than Magpies coach Noel Wood.
“At
the completion of the game all the players were smiling
and very happy to get the win, and hopefully they can
continue that now they have got the taste of winning
back,” Wood said.
“There
is still plenty of work to be done, and there are a
few players to return from injury as well, so the most
important thing now is that we continue to stick to
our game plan and I’m confident that there will be more
wins to come.”
One
area that crippled the Magpies late in the game, and
this allowed the Jets to score a few tries to narrow
the final score, was some poor calls from the referee
and his touch judges.
“Throughout
the game there were numerous strips in the tackle, and
nothing was done about it, and I think that it is just
not good enough, I mean, why do you have touch judges,
if they don’t see these types of things,” he remarked.
“Something
needs to be done, as the Jets players continually racked
at the ball in the tackles and nothing was done about
it, and they [the Jets players] just kept doing it when
they knew they could get away with it.
“It’s
these type of calls that could have cost us the game
if the scores were closer, and I certainly don’t want
our season decided by poor decisions later in the competition,
as it’s hard enough to win as it is.”
Standout
players in the Magpies win over the Jets were Matt Brinkworth,
Justin Miller, Will Dreves, and Darren Nolan.
In
the other games at Victoria Park on Sunday the Magpies
reserve grade side got back into winning rhythm by easily
defeating the Appin Dogs 48 to 14, while in the Under
18 A’s game against the Narellan Jets the Magpies ran
out 30 to 4 winners in a game that was stopped for a
lengthy period of time in the first half due to an injury
suffered by a Jets player. The Under 18 B’s Magpies
were defeated 36 to 12 by the Warragamba Wombats.
This
Sunday at Victoria Park the Magpies take on the Oakdale
Workers in both First (2.30pm) and Reserve Grade (1pm)
in what promises to be two hard fought games, while
the Under 18 A’s play the Mt. Annan Knights (11.30am)
in yet another entertaining game, and the Under 18 B’s
face the Bowral Bunnies (10am) and this match is regarded
as the best chance for the Magpies to notch up their
first win for the season.
