Magpies Go Down in All Four Grades                                                                           21-5-08

It certainly wasn’t the best of weekends in the Group 6 Rugby League competition for the Picton Magpies as all four grades, First Grade, Reserve Grade, Under 18 A’s, and Under 18 B’s, were defeated, and First Grade and Under 18 A’s sides in particular were defeated by narrow margins.

In First Grade, Reverse Grade, and the Under 18 A’s the Magpies took on the Camden Rams, while the Under 18 B’s came up against The Oaks Tigers.

It was a much improved Magpies First Grade side that came up against the Rams at Kirkham Park on Sunday, but unfortunately for the Magpies, who had a new look side and defensive play, they were defeated 22 to 18.

Leading 18 to 10 with 13 minutes left on the clock and the Magpies looked set for their second victory of the season, but with a strong wind behind them the Rams were able to score two quick tries and gain control of the match. Despite their best efforts, which included a break by hooker Matt Brinkworth the closing stages of the match, the Magpies were unable to regain control of the match, and the Rams ran out 22 to 18 winners.

Magpies coach Noel Wood was pleased with the side’s effort, especially after the woeful performance the previous weekend against the Moss Vale Dragons.

“It certainly was a much improved effort this weekend, and we were unlucky to lose the match, that’s for sure,” Wood said.

“To their credit the Rams were able to use the wind to their advantage late in the match with a good kicking game and came out winners as a result.”

In Reserve Grade the Magpies suffered their first defeat of the season when they were comfortably defeated 34 to 12 by the Rams, and Magpies captain-coach Luke Davies summed up his team’s performance in a few words.

“We simply didn’t turn up to play,” Davies rued.

Two intercept passes that led to tries played a big part in the Magpies 24 to 22 loss to the Rams in the Under 18 A’s and the team maintained their second place position on the ladder.

The Under 18 B’s Magpies side remains winless after five rounds when they were defeated 32 to 0 by The Oaks Tigers at Dudley Chesham Sportsground. The Magpies only trailed The Oaks Tigers 12 – 0 at half-time. With the team improving with each week, their first win of the 2008 season shouldn’t be too far away.

This Sunday’s (May 25) Group 6 action for the Magpies will be at Victoria Park where First Grade take on the Narellan Jets, Reserve Grade face the Appin Dogs, Under 18 A’s play the Narellan Jets, and the Under 18 B’s tackle the Warragamba Wombats. The Under 18 B’s game will start at 10am, Under 18 A’s 11.30am, Reserve Grade 1pm, and First Grade 2.30pm.
