In
what promises to be the match of the round, this Sunday
on the home soil of Victoria Park the Picton Magpies
will face up against the Thirlmere Roosters in the third
round of the Group 6 Rugby League competition.
During
the off season a number of Thirlmere Roosters players
moved over to join the Picton Magpies, and their former
coach in Noel Woods did likewise a season earlier, and
that has certainly set the scene for what is an already
fiercely contested local derby.
“There
is no question about it, there is no love lost between
Picton and Thirlmere clubs, and this Sunday’s matches
promise to be a great day of rugby league from the Under
18’s all the way up to the first grade games as this
rivalry filters all the way through the grades,” enthused
Picton Magpies Football Club president, Dennis Zammit.
“I
encourage everyone to get down to Victoria Park in what
will be the Picton Magpies first home game of the year,
and the Picton versus Thirlmere games always draw a
big crowd and this Sunday should be no different.”
With
one win and one loss after two rounds of the Group 6
first grade competition, the Picton Magpies, with a
line up that features ex Roosters in Justin Miller,
Nathan Sutton, Matt Brinkworth and Clayton Parkin, are
eager to take on last year’s first grade premiership
runner ups who remain undefeated after two rounds and
have a number of former NRL players in Leo Dynovor (who
was an understudy for both Allan Langer at the Brisbane
Broncos and Andrew Johns at the Newcastle Knights during
the mid to late 1990s) and Troy Wozniak (ex Parramatta
Eels and Wests Tigers player) in their ranks.
So
this Sunday the only place to be is Victoria Park to
see the Picton Magpies tackle the Thirlmere Roosters
in what promises to be the match of the round.
The
Under 18 A’s will kick off the day with their match
at 11.30am, followed by reserve grade at 1pm, and first
grade at 2.30pm.
